The main aim of the Design was to provide a Creative and Healthy environment for the Young children. Early schooling years are key to the overall development of the Child. The brief was to keep the costs as low as possible. The site was located in Pallikaranai, one of the fast growing outskirts of Chennai. The Site was tight, measuring only 36,000 sq ft and had an Odd L-Shaped Geometry. Due to the tight site the School was forced to develop vertically. This provided additional challenges to the design. The Planning was such that all the classrooms had at-least two sides which were open to the exterior with large windows for natural light and cross ventilation. This was done through the introduction of natural light pockets in the corridor which also gave social green spaces interspaced with-in the circulation. The L-shaped site provided the constraint of the shape. The South Wing was designed to house the Common facilities like the Admin, Entrance Lobby, Labs, Library and common Rooms. The West Wing houses the Class-rooms, toilets and Staff areas. The Vertical circulation was designed as Nodes which facilitates the interaction between various spaces. The East and West Façade were designed with Vertical and Horizontal Fins which cut the direct sunlight and provided glare-free natural light to the classrooms. Storage areas were placed at random with-in these fins to add functionality and bring playfulness into the façade. The South Façade was designed with a social green spaces. Seating areas were provided with Green areas at random. This cuts the heat load from the South and brings in the Cool Sea-breeze inside the building. Both these facades were provided with Colored Panels which brings the Play of Colors and Identity. The Main Entrance façade was designed as a Letter Wall with Alphabets, Equations and Vernacular Script to bring the Identity of a good learning environment within the context. The School has maximum attendance and the Children thoroughly enjoy the Play of Colours and the Environment. The Play areas and social green spaces help the students get the feel of spaciousness even in a vertical development.
