The tight, narrow (6mx18m) site was located on a busy arterial road with heavy traffic and pollution in the wall-to-wall construction area of Chintadripet. The brief was to create a home for an Indian joint family in this congested plot. The primary objective was to create ‘breathing green-spaces’ so that the occupants were protected from pollution and were given much needed privacy. In order to utilize the space effectively, straight linear staircase was introduced which occupies less space. This is opened to sky to ventilate the whole house. The bedroom overlooked the road through a jaali screen that restricted views into the house from the outside. The ventilated screen facilitated airflow within the bed room filtering dusts from the busy road. The terrace was designed as a landscaped open space countering the tightness of the built-portion.
